Boqwuinta is a 10-year-old red tabby senior cat for adoption, currently thriving in a foster home. When he arrived at my condo from the shelter, he didn’t hide. He didn’t crouch. He didn’t hesitate. He walked in like he owned the place. At over 15 pounds and sporting a classic red tabby coat (plus what looks suspiciously like black lipstick), Boqwuinta has a presence. He explored every room immediately, completely unfazed, a full 180 from the two frightened kittens I fostered before him. From day one, he made it clear: this is a home, and I belong here.

What It’s Like to Live With This Senior Cat for Adoption
Boqwuinta is independent and confident, but quietly affectionate in his own way. He enjoys his personal space, yet seeks out pets multiple times a day. Over time, he has grown more comfortable with closeness. These days, he often chooses to sit beside me on the couch, and occasionally even sits partially (or fully) on my lap for short stretches.
He’s not a constant lap cat yet, but he’s clearly warming up and becoming more affectionate as he settles in. He prefers to move at his own pace, which makes those moments of closeness feel all the sweeter.
He’s ten, so he’s long past the chaotic kitten stage, but he still gets playful bursts: chasing balls, cat wands, shadows, and light reflections. He loves YouTube cat TV, watching birds from the window, and keeping an eye on passersby outside. Most of the day, though, you’ll find him sleeping in the sun or stretched out comfortably on the bed.
About a month into fostering, he developed one of his signature quirks: every time I rub his back, he gently licks my arm in return. I choose to believe he’s very serious about cleanliness, both his own and mine. He also does the classic booty-up pose when he’s enjoying pets, which never fails to make me smile. Oh, and he loves to make biscuits!
A Senior Cat’s Diary
Want a peek into Boqwuinta’s daily life? He keeps a diary, where he shares little updates from his day.
What Boqwuinta Needs to Stay Healthy and Happy
Boqwuinta does have special needs, but they’re well understood and very manageable.
He’s allergic to fleas and to certain foods. Because of this:
- He needs his monthly flea treatment given on time
- He eats a prescription Z/D diet for food sensitivities (wet and dry prescription food)
- He has sensitive skin and does best eating and drinking from ceramic bowls, which should be changed frequently
Once we identified these needs and adjusted his care, the improvement was huge. His skin calmed down, his fur grew back beautifully, and he’s been doing so much better overall. His routine is simple and predictable, and he tolerates it very well.
I truly believe he could be a wonderful companion for a family where a child also has food sensitivities. There’s something quietly comforting about sharing that experience with a pet who understands it, in his own way.
The Home He’ll Thrive In
Boqwuinta is a confident, adaptable cat who settles in well once he feels secure. While he appreciates having space and routine, he doesn’t require a tranquil household and would likely do well in a variety of home environments after an initial adjustment period.
I don’t yet know how he’d get along with other pets, and although I haven’t seen him around children, he would probably be most comfortable with older kids who can respect his space and gentle nature. With patience and consistency, Boqwuinta has shown that he adjusts well and becomes more affectionate as he settles in.
Why I’m Fostering
I’m fostering Boqwuinta to help him transition out of the shelter and into a home environment where he could relax, decompress, and truly show who he is. Fostering has allowed him to settle into a routine, build confidence, and receive the individualized care he needed.
While I’m not in a position to adopt right now due to my own circumstances and commitments, fostering allows me to provide a temporary home while helping cats like Boqwuinta get ready for their forever families. Letting him go will be hard for me, but he’s ready for his next chapter.
Boqwuinta came into foster care after a few difficult transitions, and his sensitivities made shelter life especially challenging. In a home setting, we were able to identify his triggers, adjust his care, and help him feel comfortable again. The difference has been remarkable.
Now that his needs are well understood and his personality has had time to shine, Boqwuinta is ready for his next chapter. He’s a gentle, confident, affectionate cat who has adjusted beautifully to home life and is prepared to settle into a forever home where he can finally stay.
