Poppy’s Story

Poppy was originally adopted as a kitten along with another cat, Harry. They were good friends but weren’t bonded, and both were eventually returned to the shelter shortly after turning one year old.

From what I understand, their return was the result of circumstances involving the humans rather than anything Poppy or Harry had done.

Neither cat deserved to find themselves back in a shelter.

I fostered Poppy and Harry for several weeks immediately after they were surrendered.

And they were both absolutely adorable.

Harry was a gorgeous Siamese with bright blue eyes, and he was adopted again pretty quickly after they went to the cat cafe.

Poppy, unfortunately, is still waiting. And she is gorgeous too, with big yellow eyes!!

Poppy Took a Little Time to Come Out of Her Shell

When Poppy first arrived at my house, she was fairly independent and spent a lot of time hiding in my closet with Harry.

Harry ventured out first, and eventually Poppy started following his lead.

Little by little, she became more comfortable.

I started seeing her out more often. Then she began coming over to me for pets. She would purr, give me little head bumps and gradually become more interested in what I was doing.

That’s one of the things I loved about her.

Poppy isn’t the kind of cat who needs to be the center of attention every second. She’s perfectly happy having her own space and doing her own thing, but once she feels comfortable with you, she’ll come looking for affection too.

She even sat on my lap a couple of times. I suspect that with the right person and a little time to settle in, she could easily become the kind of cat who takes up permanent residence on your lap.

She Loved Sleeping Next to Me

One of my favorite things about fostering Poppy was waking up and finding her curled up beside me on the bed.

She also loved being up high.

One of her favorite spots was the cat perch by my window, where she could spend time watching everything happening in the neighborhood. Sometimes she’d nap there. Other times, she’d sit and monitor the outside world as if she had very important business to attend to.

She also loved climbing to the top of my headboard and watching over me from above.

Basically, Poppy likes to have a good view.

Poppy Is Curious About Everything

She’s also an adventurous little cat.

If there was something happening underneath the couch, Poppy needed to know about it.

If there was a bird outside, she was watching.

Hummingbirds and butterflies were particularly interesting.

And then there was her obsession with mirrors.

Poppy would stand up on her back legs with her paws on the mirror ledge and stare at herself.

I don’t know exactly what she thought was happening, but she seemed very invested in it.

Perhaps she simply knew she was gorgeous and wanted to admire the evidence.

She’s Gentle, Playful and Good With Other Cats

Poppy is gentle by nature.

She and Harry played together while they were with me, including the kind of playful wrestling and play fighting that cats do, but she was never rough or aggressive.

She’s also good at giving another cat space.

That’s another reason I think she could be a wonderful companion for someone who already has a cat, assuming the introduction is done properly.

She has shown that she enjoys having another cat around while also being independent enough to entertain herself.

I also understood that her original family had children, and given how gentle she was with me, I think she could potentially do well in a family environment. As always with cats and children, individual personalities and appropriate introductions matter.

Why Is Poppy Still Waiting?

This is the part I don’t understand.

Harry was adopted again quickly.

Poppy wasn’t.

She’s been at Cats & Crystals Cat Cafe in Oceanside since around the end of May, waiting for someone to choose her.

Maybe people walk past her because she’s no longer a tiny kitten.

Maybe she’s just one of those cats who takes a little longer to show her personality in a busy environment.

When Poppy was in my home, she needed some time to feel comfortable before she started showing me who she really was.

And once she did, I couldn’t help but fall for her.

She’s gentle. She’s playful. She’s affectionate without being overwhelming. She likes other cats. She likes having her own space. She loves looking out windows, climbing high, watching birds and butterflies, and apparently admiring herself in mirrors.

And she has the softest fur.

Seriously.

It’s one of the first things I noticed about her.

Fostering Poppy Meant More to Me Than She Knew

There is another reason Poppy has stayed in my mind.

I had her during the first anniversary of losing my own cat.

That was obviously a difficult day for me, and being able to cuddle with Poppy was unexpectedly comforting.

I was very sad when it was time for Poppy and Harry to leave my home. But I wasn’t ready to adopt another cat myself.

That doesn’t make seeing Poppy still waiting any easier.

I know fostering is supposed to be temporary. The whole point is to give an animal somewhere safe to land while they wait for their next home.

But sometimes you get attached.

And sometimes you see that the foster cat you loved is still waiting, and you desperately wish someone would see what you saw.

That’s where Poppy is now.
