REI Sahara Shade Hoodie: Why I Keep Reaching for It
I’ve worn the REI Sahara Shade Hoodie on some of my favorite hikes and backpacking trips, and honestly, it’s one of those pieces I grab almost every time I head outdoors.
One of my favorite memories with it was hiking back from Havasupai, 10 miles under the scorching sun. The hoodie kept my skin protected without overheating, and I didn’t have to stop for sunscreen constantly. Another time, I wore it on the Mt. Baden-Powell summit, where it was 90°F, and it remained lightweight, breathable, and protective.
Why I Love It (Trail-Tested)
- Sun protection that works: UPF 50+ means I can skip reapplying sunscreen on my arms and neck during long trail days.
- Weather versatile: I wear it when it’s hot, windy, or chilly. On cooler mornings, a tank underneath keeps me comfy; under another layer, it works as a cozy mid-layer.
- Comfortable fit: I wear a size S; it’s a wider fit than I’d normally choose, but XS was too tight. It moves with me on long hikes and pairs well with a variety of bottoms.
- Practical touches I love: Thumbholes keep sleeves in place during windy hikes, the 3-panel hood with crossover neck protects without falling over your eyes, and the shaped hem makes bending and scrambling a breeze.
- Durable & easy-care: I’ve washed mine dozens of times, and it still feels fresh. Sometimes I even sleep in it on multi-day trips, it’s that comfy.
- Style + colors: Fresh annual colorways make it easy to mix and match with your trail wardrobe.
