Ways to save money to backpack in National Parks
The annual America the Beautiful Pass
America the Beautiful Pass is a must if you visit three or more national parks within a year. Good for a year’s worth of visits, the annual, America the Beautiful Pass is your ticket to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites nationwide, including all our national parks.
The “America the Beautiful” pass, officially known as the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass, offers several benefits to its holders. Here are some of the key advantages:
- Access to National Parks and Federal Lands: The primary benefit is unlimited access to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites across the United States, including national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, and other public lands.
- Cost Savings: The pass provides a cost-effective way for individuals and families to enjoy outdoor recreational activities without having to pay entrance fees at each site separately. This is particularly beneficial for those who plan to visit multiple federal recreation sites within a year.
- Convenience: Instead of dealing with individual entrance fees and permits at each site, pass holders can streamline the process by presenting their pass at the entrance, saving time and effort.
- Support for Conservation: The fees collected from the sale of the passes contribute to the maintenance and improvement of the parks and recreation areas. By purchasing the pass, individuals actively contribute to the preservation and protection of these natural treasures.
- Variety of Pass Options: The “America the Beautiful” pass comes in various forms, including annual passes for individuals, families, and seniors, as well as free passes for U.S. military members and dependents, fourth-grade students, and those with permanent disabilities.
- Special Discounts: In addition to free entrance to federal recreation sites, the pass may provide discounts on certain amenities and activities within the parks, such as camping fees or guided tours. The specific discounts can vary by location.
- Flexibility: The pass is valid for one year from the month of purchase, providing flexibility for pass holders to plan their visits to different sites throughout the year.
Overall, the “America the Beautiful” pass offers a convenient and cost-effective way for individuals and families to explore and enjoy the diverse natural landscapes and recreational opportunities that the United States has to offer.

Backpacking is not just a recreational activity; it’s a transformative experience that beckons you to step outside your comfort zone, embrace the unknown, and discover the incredible rewards that come with exploring the great outdoors.
My favorite backpacking destination is Joshua Tree National Park, and they introduced new backpacking permit rules in 2023. Here is everything you need to know about it!
My wilderness backpacking experience in JTNP
Backpacking in JTNP is an obvious choice for me as the park is just 2.5 hours away from home. After my first overnighter there, I was completely hooked! Backpacking there became a regular occurrence for me, year-round. I cannot get enough of the high desert wilderness, solitude, and blissful silence that comes with it.
I love each season for different reasons, but my favorite is summer because it feels as though I have the park to myself. Of course, in the summer I hike out later at night due to the hot temperatures. I also only go a minimum of one mile out from the trailhead, to avoid a long, hot walk the next morning. As you would expect, the content of my backpack also varies according to the seasons. I carry more water than warm layers in the summer, whereas in the winter it is the other way around.
The old yellow permit system allowed me so much flexibility that I often went on a moment’s notice. With the introduction of this new reservation-based permit system, I may have to be less spontaneous about it.
What are Joshua Tree’s New Backpacking Permit Rules, effective March 1st, 2023?
- backpackers must obtain their backpacking permits in advance at recreation.gov. The site is already taking reservations.
- backpackers can purchase limited same-day permits online, by phone at (760) 367-5554, or the park’s headquarters in Twentynine Palms.
- the new permit costs a $6 non-refundable fee for 1-14 nights, covering 1-12 people.
- backpackers must review and acknowledge backcountry information and video as part of the reservation process
- The park is specifying wilderness backpacking zones with designated campsites along the Boy Scout Trail.
- in all zones (except Boy Scout Trail), wilderness backpacking must be at least 1 mile (1.6km) from the backcountry trailhead, 1/2 mile (0.8km) from roads, and 200 feet (61m) from trails.
IMPORTANT: The use of the yellow self-registration permits will be prohibited after March 1st!
With these changes, the park seeks to improve visitors’ experience and increase the protection of wilderness resources. The new backcountry information and videos will reinforce the Leave No Trace principles and help ensure backpackers follow best practices. Thus, in turn, we will be able to help sustain the use of the great outdoors for longer.
So what are you waiting for? The new reservation website is already live and you can start booking your next backpacking permit now! But don’t forget that you need to also pay to enter the national park! To do that, I recommend the annual America the Beautiful Pass!
Final Thoughts on JT’s new backpacking permit rules
In my opinion, the new backpacking permit system in Joshua Tree National Park is an excellent idea. It will help preserve the park’s wilderness for as long as possible by educating us all on best practices. This knowledge also applies to other wilderness areas too. And finally, these new rules could help me become more organized and plan my trips a little more! 🙂
