Garmin inReach Mini 3 Plus
Quick Take: Is the Mini 3 Plus Right for You?
Deciding between models? Read my Garmin GPSMAP 67i Review to compare it with the heavier rugged unit.
- Get the Mini 3 Plus if: You want reliable satellite messaging, photo/voice sending, and 24/7 SOS in an ultralight package, and you already use your phone for primary trail mapping.
- Get the GPSMAP 67i instead if: You want full, detailed topographic maps on a larger button-operated screen so you never have to pull out your smartphone on the trail.
Key Features & Updates:
- Voice & Photo Messaging: You can send 30-second voice notes directly through the device’s built-in mic/speaker or the Garmin Messenger app, plus send and view photos off-grid.
- 1.9” Color Touchscreen: Replaces the old black-and-white screen, making it much faster to type out longer texts directly on the device when your phone is dead.
- 24/7 Satellite SOS: Uses the Iridium satellite network to connect directly to the Garmin Response center in an emergency.
- Battery Life: Runs up to 350 hours in standard 10-minute tracking mode, or around 95 hours in performance messaging mode.
- Compact & Durable: Rated IP67 for water and dust, and clips right onto your pack strap with the included carabiner.
How It Works On The Trail
While dedicated handhelds like the GPSMAP 67i carry full preloaded topo maps on the device itself, the Mini 3 Plus is designed to keep your pack light.
It handles all your critical satellite communication, sending check-ins to family, requesting trail weather updates, and triggering SOS, while relying on the Garmin Messenger or Garmin Explore smartphone apps for heavy map viewing. If your phone battery dies, you can still use the Mini 3 Plus on its own for TracBack routing to retrace your steps, view incoming messages, or text for help.
