SOL Emergency Bivvy Review: Don’t Hike Without One
I’ve carried the SOL Emergency Bivvy for three years and never once had to use it. Obviously, that’s exactly how I want it to stay. But knowing that it’s sitting at the bottom of my pack on every big hike gives me a level of comfort that’s worth more than its weight.
It’s light enough that I don’t even think about it when I’m packing; it’s just always there. At 84 x 36 inches, there’s plenty of room to get fully inside if you ever need to.
The material reflects up to 90% of your body heat and the sealed seams block out wind, rain, and snow. You can use it as a sleeping bag, wrap it around you as a blanket, or rig it as a shelter while you wait for help. The bright orange colour makes you easy to spot if search and rescue are looking for you.
The stuff sack has a tinder cord attached so you can start a fire, and there’s a rescue whistle so you can signal for help. For 3.8 oz, that’s a lot covered.
I hope I never need it. But it goes in my pack every single time without question.
