What I Use It For
I rely on the Sony FE 100-400mm GM whenever I’m shooting wildlife or need to compress a landscape. For example, during a visit to the San Diego Safari Park, I used this lens paired with the Sony 1.4x Teleconverter to get a tight, detailed shot of a tiger.
Even though I was zoomed in at an effective 560mm, the lens stabilization allowed me to get a tack-sharp shot at a surprisingly slow shutter speed (1/60 sec, f/8, ISO 400).
Pro Hiking Tip: Carrying a 3lb lens on a long trail can be exhausting. To make it more comfortable, I actually hook the tripod collar ‘arm’ over my backpack’s waist strap. It stabilizes the lens against my hip and takes the weight off my neck, making it much easier to hike for miles while keeping the camera ready for a quick shot. It’s a total game-changer for anyone who finds telephoto lenses bulky!
