Why It’s My Go-To Adventure Lens
If I could only bring one lens on a trip, it would be the Sony 24-70mm GM II. It’s the ultimate all-rounder because it handles everything from wide-angle landscapes to intimate portraits with that beautiful f/2.8 depth of field.
Astro-Photography Proof: Many people think you need a dedicated prime lens for stars, but as you can see from my Joshua Tree star trail photo above, this lens is incredible for the night sky. The f/2.8 aperture lets in plenty of light, and the sharpness is consistent even when shooting wide open at 24mm. Whether I’m capturing a sunrise at Diamond Valley Lake or a Milky Way shot in the desert, this lens stays on my camera 90% of the time.
Capturing the Desert Details
While the Sony 24-70mm GM II is a landscape beast, its f/2.8 constant aperture is what really makes it special for detail shots. On a recent trip through the Arizona desert, I used it to isolate this cactus.
By shooting wide open, I was able to create a shallow depth of field that makes the textures of the needles pop against a beautifully blurred background. It’s this versatility, going from a sweeping desert sunset to an intimate botanical detail in seconds, that makes this lens my most-used piece of glass.
