Living at the beach in San Diego does not mean we miss out on the snow! After checking the wintry conditions on this Mount Laguna webcam, I saw there was still plenty of snow, yet the roads were dry. So off I went to explore this winter wonderland one hour’s drive from San Diego! This blog post also includes snow gear recommendations to ensure you’re fully prepared for your adventure.

About Mount Laguna

Mount Laguna is located east of San Diego in the Laguna Mountains on the eastern edge of the Cleveland National Forest. It is at approximately 6000ft elevation above sea level. The little town has a general store and lodge, a post office, and a restaurant, just a few steps away from the scenic Pacific Crest Trail. The general store is well stocked and makes a popular resupply stop for PCT thru-hikers.

During the winter months, the Laguna Mountain area can provide a great opportunity for snowshoeing and sledding for kids of all ages. Visitors may need to use chains on their vehicles when driving up the mountain due to snowy or icy road conditions though. As you come off Interstate 8, there is a parking area to install chains, if needed.

The area also has plenty of other activities available such as many hiking trails, mountain biking trails, horseback riding, campgrounds, and picnic areas. If you’re lucky, you might even encounter a deer or other wildlife there too. And lastly, I also often go there to capture the night sky, as it also offers clear skies, free from light pollution!

Mount Laguna is also close to Julian and Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, so you could make a whole weekend of it!

Gear Recommendation for a snow day in Mount Laguna

Planning a day out in the snow? Here are a few essential items you’ll need to ensure an enjoyable experience. First, make sure your car is equipped with snow chains for added traction on icy roads. Plan ahead and be prepared for a memorable day in the snow!

  1. Snow Chains for Car Tires: Essential for driving in snowy or icy conditions, snow chains provide extra traction, reducing the risk of slipping and sliding on slick roads.
  2. Snow Clothing: Dressing appropriately for the cold weather is crucial. Invest in waterproof and insulated snow pants, jackets, gloves, and boots to stay warm and dry while enjoying outdoor activities in the snow.
  3. Polarized Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays and glare reflecting off the snow with polarized sunglasses. They enhance visibility and reduce eye strain, especially in bright, snowy conditions.
  4. Hand Warmers: Keep your hands cozy and comfortable with disposable hand warmers. These small, portable heat packs are perfect for slipping into gloves or pockets to provide instant warmth during chilly outdoor adventures.
  5. Microspikes: Microspikes are traction devices that slip over your footwear, providing excellent grip on icy or packed snow-covered trails. They’re essential for maintaining stability and preventing slips and falls during winter hikes or walks.
  6. Thermal Flask or Insulated Water Bottle: Stay hydrated and keep hot beverages like tea, coffee, or hot chocolate on hand with a thermal flask or insulated water bottle. Enjoying a warm drink can be a delightful way to stay warm and cozy during your snow day outing.
  7. Snow Sled or Toboggan: A sled or toboggan provides hours of entertainment for kids (and adults!) in the snow. Whether it’s gliding down gentle slopes or having fun in your backyard, a sturdy sled or toboggan is a must-have for snowy adventures. Look for models with sturdy construction and comfortable seating to ensure safety and enjoyment for all ages.

Hiking in Mount Laguna

I often go to Mount Laguna to hike the PCT, which connects with several trails, if you want to make it a full-day hike! The PCT to Garnet Peak was the first hike I ever took there, and I start from the Desert View Picnic site, rather than do the shorter hike you might find on AllTrails.

Parking in some areas of Mount Laguna requires the display of a Southern California Adventure Pass. You can get one at REI!

However, this time around, I hiked the Sunset Trail in this gorgeous winter wonderland.

Sunset Trail is an excellent hiking destination for visitors of all levels and can be hiked as a 3.5-mile loop. Located in a beautiful forest, the trail offers stunning views of meadows, ponds, and even lakes during the rainy season. It’s a great way to enjoy nature and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Last week, the melted snow caused the trail to become a river in some parts. On the northern side though, the trail was still full of snow, so much so that it was impossible to know exactly where the trail was, and I had to use my GPS to ensure I was still on the trail.

Below are some of the photos I captured along the way.
