About Mount Laguna
Location and overview
Mount Laguna is situated east of San Diego in the Laguna Mountains, perched on the eastern edge of the Cleveland National Forest. At an elevation of approximately 6,000 feet above sea level, this charming mountain town offers a general store, a lodge, a post office, and a restaurant—all just steps away from the scenic Pacific Crest Trail. The well-stocked general store is a popular resupply stop for PCT thru-hikers.
Winter Activities
During the winter months, the Laguna Mountain area transforms into a snowy wonderland, perfect for snowshoeing and sledding for both kids and adults. While the snow is higher up in Mount Laguna, the area’s popularity often causes traffic to back up on Interstate 8. Be prepared for icy or snow-covered roads, as chains may be required for your vehicle. I purchased these snow chains and highly recommend them!
A designated parking area for chain installation is conveniently located right off I-8. Before heading out, check the Mount Laguna webcam for current conditions, and be sure to slow down as you approach Sunrise Highway, as congestion is common on busy snow days.
Outdoor Adventures
The area offers a variety of activities, including hiking trails, mountain biking, horseback riding, campgrounds, and picnic areas. Wildlife enthusiasts might even spot deer or other animals while exploring the trails.
Stargazing
For night sky enthusiasts, Mount Laguna is an excellent destination for capturing the stars. Its clear, light-pollution-free skies make it a haven for stargazers and astrophotographers.
Nearby Attractions
Mount Laguna is also close to Julian and Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, so you could make a whole weekend of it!
