Mountain Hardwear Mineral King All Season Tent Review
The Mineral King All Season tent by Mountain Hardwear is a rugged upgrade to one of my favorite shelters. Having used the original three-season version on five-day trips every month for years, I was excited to see how this version stacks up. If you are looking for a tent that transitions from standard camping to winter backpacking, this is a serious contender.
Field Test: Setup and Stability
Setup is genuinely easy; the main poles come pre-connected in a single bundle. The tent pitches incredibly taut, which is crucial for shedding water cleanly. One thing that surprised me was the weight of the canopy; attaching the hooks to the poles feels heavier and stiffer than the 3-season version. This is because the canopy is made of 40D nylon ripstop rather than mesh, which provides significantly more protection from the elements.
- Stability Tip: The tent comes with 10 stakes, but for maximum security in high winds, you could use up to 12.
- Pro Upgrade: I highly recommend swapping the stock stakes for MSR Mini Groundhogs. They are much harder to bend, and their light-reflective cords make them easy to spot with a headlamp so you aren’t tripping over them at 2:00 AM.
Interior Space & Elite Storage
The symmetrical rectangular shape provides a lot of usable space. At 50″ wide, it fits a single 30″ luxe sleeping pad with room to spare, or two standard 20–25″ pads comfortably.
- The 6-Pocket System: The storage is incredibly functional, including two overhead gear loft pockets. One is mesh, which is perfect for sliding your phone in to watch a movie from your sleeping bag.
- HangTight System: This cord and rod system along the ceiling acts as an internal stabilizer. It’s perfect for hanging damp socks or gear in any direction.
Weather Protection & Ventilation
The standout feature for all-season use is the ripstop nylon canopy. Unlike mesh-heavy tents, this design protects you from wind and spindrift. I certainly won’t be waking up covered in red sand like I did once in my 3-season tent!
- Ventilation: Even with the rainfly on, the top door vents provide solid airflow. On warmer nights, you can unzip the canopy doors to expose the mesh and boost circulation.
- Packing Tip: When taking the tent down, leave the canopy doors slightly unzipped. Because the ripstop doesn’t breathe like mesh, unzipping allows the air to escape so the tent flattens easily for packing.
